I was sampling up a yarn the other day. I have a soft bulky weight yarn called Marble Chunky. It usually gets 3.5sts per inch. I was very sure that it would knit to 4 sts very easily.
the result? Yes, it does knit to 4 sts very easily, but the fabric is denser and has a lot of body (opposite of drape). It wasn't what I was hoping for, but it opened up a whole new train of thought. The resulting fabric is PUURRRRFECT for jackets and sweatshirt styles. It is thicker, and dense, and slightly firm. Exactly what is needed for coats and hoodies, etc. The other plus is that this fabric will wear much better, because it is knit so tightly.

Very true. I work tighter gauge usually because I'm afraid of wind getting through gaps in drapey knits. Not much of a shawl person.
