I love crochet, but I like soft and somewhat drapey. When I find a yarn that calls for a US#7 knitting, I covert that to its mm size. Which is normally a 4.5mm. Then I go up a bit....maybe 5mm or 5.5mm and find the matching crochet hook. That would be an H or an I hook. But there are times when a tight stitch is needed. Crochet purses do better with a tight stitch, as well as socks . . . I love sport weight yarns crocheted. The yarn is a bit thinner and produces a fabric of a thickness that is very wearable. I tend to crochet too tightly, so I usually end up going up a hook size or two, unless I'm doing amigurumi, which you don't want the filling to show through.

Yup, I would agree that thats one time that you do want to crochet tightly!!

When I want looser crochet I go to the much larger hooks with multiple strands of yarn. My favorite size is about a Q, but I have larger.

I did a couple afghans years ago with an S hook, and 7 strands of yarn. Each yarn was different, from shiny silk to fuzzy mohair. But I kept in the same similar color. One was yellow, because I love the cheeri-ness of yellow. The other is blue. Very warm, tons of fun! Not a summertime project tho!

I have done many afghans in the summer. Not fun but you do what you have to when things need getting done.
